overstay but still applied

I have a relative who has overstayed his visa - and has applied to stay here permanent in UK (He's from India) - he has asked me to sponsor him .....
I am not happy with the whole scenario (he's 72) and he's my uncle ....

I cannot imagine sponsoring him because of the health welfare - as I cannot rely on government funds ....... the family is putting lot of pressure
and I dont know how to get out of this ....

Is government of Uk very linient on old people - and if so how much finance
do I have to show to support him ???
