  • Moving to India long term

My wife and myself are frequent visitors to India. This is due to my wifes mother owning two schools within Gujarat.. We have both worked as teachers within the schools in the past on a voluntary basis.

We now have a son who is almost a year old. In the near future, we are looking to go and help voluntarily as her mother is now getting older and requires help with the running of the two schools. We would also like our son to attend nursery there.

We are coming up with problems applying for long term visas. This is down to not being able to apply for tourist visas for more than 6 months and having to stay out of the country for 2 months after leaving.

My mother in law who owns the school is a British national and owns a British passport, but is married to an Indian national. She was before married to a British national of Indian origin, but divorced and remarried in India around 17 years ago. Unfortunately, my wifes father does not remember when or where he surrendered his Indian passport, so we cannot gather proof for a five year visa, although her stepfather is an Indian national.

Please can anyone give us some advice on the best way to apply for entry for my wife (who was born in Britain but of Indian dissent) myself (who was born and is a British national), and my son (who was born and is a British national). Also let us know if there is any documentation we could provide from the Indian government or my wifes mother which would help our cause.

We would like to stay long term in the near future in India to help with the schools and make sure they thrive and achieve the standards that our mother has set out to do for the past 17 years. This will be very costly and disruptive to the school, if we need to leave the country for two months at a time after every six months.

We are currently applying for a six month tourist visa to visit for a few weeks in December to arrange a more permanant move in the near future. Any help or advice would be very much appreciated.
