  • Urgent: Help with B1/B2 and duration

    Hi

I want to attend a scientific meet scheduled for September 21st to 25th, 2013. So this automatically puts me in the B1 Visa category. I also plan on a short and quick vacation before the conference/ after the conference With no harm, I understand that I opt for B1/B2 visa.

Now I need suggestions for the following queries.
I would seek an appointment in the month of May. As I am quite not sure about the date of travel. Does that sound good or I put in 3 months intended duration of stay?

I am just to curious to know what duration I could be offered?

    Suggestions are welcomed!

The duration you mention (DS160 and the interview) is a very sensitive criterion for a + decision.

3 months is too long for a 5 day meet even if you want to holiday for the rest of the time.
That makes the officer think vacation is more important than business and probably you have something else in mind
( looking for a job etc.) which means----->>>denial.

    In a nutshell;
*Just ask for a two week stay around the dates of your meet. And opt for B1 on DS 160.
That will tell the officer that you are only focussed on business and have nothing else on your mind.
*The visa everyone gets is a B1/B2 regardless of what one opts for.
*Asking for 2 weeks does not mean you will get a 2 week visa. 3 months is usually the min they give.
*Stay duration is not determined by the visa but at US entry .
They easily give 3 months, 6 months to first time visitors.
*Granted a B1 status at entry , one is permitted to do B2 ( pleasure activities).
So you can vacation after your meet.

Aight Thanks for the info. Well I have stayed in the U.S earlier (5months), returned back on time clean record. This time either before or after the meet I would like to travel a little and two weeks seems less. So will a month's duration again be terrible?

You have not read my post carefully.

Saying 2 weeks does not mean they will give you a 2 week visa.

ANd stay is determined at port of entry which is always more.

Thanks again. I will note the point.
