The I-130 form according to the http://www.immihelp.com/processing-times/ site says 5 months processing time.. I guess this is the estimated time JUST for the application to be approved. .. how long additional is the wait time for the actual family member (from Japan) to come live and work here? (i'm guessing years?) whoa!!

Just I-130 processing and then consular processing. Whole thing takes about a year in total from I-130 to visa.
If the family members are siblings or adult children of US citizens then the current wait for japan nationals is 7 to 13 yrs depending upon
which category. Look up visa bulletin on travel.state.gov for wait times.
