I am on B1 visa in US. My trip was planned for 3 months in US. Unfortunately, at the point of entry I had to go through secondary investigation because there was a mismatch of travel dates in my invitation letter and return ticket. My office’s travel department made a goof-up and they gave me invitation letter stating I would be staying in US for one month while my return tickets had 3 month later date. Officer at the Airport called up my US contact person (my client) to confirm my purpose of visit etc. Finally, he gave me 1 month entry instead of 3 months. Moreover, he made some comment in his database (content, I don’t know!)
Now, my client wants me to stay for two more months as per my original schedule. As I came to know, I can apply for extension of visa filling I-539 form.
Now, I just have 15 days in my hand to apply for extension. I am bit apprehensive about the extension in my case. Can you please answer following queries?
- In my case, because at the point of entry there was a questioning on my travel dates, do you think, it is safe to try for extension?
- Even if I apply for extension, will I get any answer in 2 months, as I came to know, they take usually 2.5 months to process etc.
- In the case, while my extension is in process, can I leave US? Will that automatically abandon my extension request?
- Lastly, if I leave the country before the decision comes or if I get the “rejected” for extension request, what would be its future implications on my B1/B2 visa (10 yr multiple entry). Somewhere, I read visa will become void etc., is that true? Do I have to apply visa again? In future, while coming to US what all documents I have to carry?
