  • Validity of B1/B2 visa after moving countries and job

    Hello,

I am an Indian citizen and I hold a valid B1/B2 visa. I had it issued to me in 2017 when I was working at my last job in India and it expires in 2027. Since then, I changed jobs and now live in the UK. This B1/B2 visa does not have an employer annotation on it.

I may have to travel to the US sometime for a work related trip. I am curious if the visa would still remain valid? I know that it remains valid even after changing employers, since there is no annotation. However, I am curious if the fact that I moved countries would have an impact?

    Any input would be appreciated.

your B1/B2 visa remains valid as long as it has not expired and has not been canceled or revoked. Changing jobs or relocating to a different country, such as moving from India to the UK, should not impact the validity of your visa, as long as the purpose of your travel to the US remains within the scope of the B1/B2 visa category. The B1 visa is typically for business-related purposes, such as attending meetings, conferences, or negotiating contracts, while the B2 visa is for tourism, visiting family and friends, or seeking medical treatment. If your work-related trip to the US falls under the permissible activities allowed within the B1 category, your visa should still be valid. However, it's important to note that at the port of entry, the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers have the authority to determine whether to admit you into the country based on the purpose and nature of your visit. They may ask you questions about your employment and the purpose of your trip, so it's crucial to provide accurate and truthful information. If you have concerns or specific questions regarding your B1/B2 visa and its applicability to your work-related trip, it is advisable to consult with an immigration attorney or reach out to the nearest US embassy or consulate for guidance. They will be able to provide you with the most accurate and up-to-date information based on your individual circumstances.

Your B1/B2 visa does not have an employer annotation, it generally remains valid even after changing employers.

Regarding your move to the UK, it's important to note that the validity of your B1/B2 visa is primarily dependent on the expiration date stated on the visa itself. As long as the visa has not expired, it should still be considered valid for travel to the United States.

However, it's important to consider that US immigration officers have the authority to assess your eligibility for entry during your travel. They may ask questions about your current circumstances, including your employment and residence in the UK. It's advisable to carry supporting documents, such as proof of your current job and residence in the UK, to demonstrate your ties to your current country of residence and assure them of the purpose of your visit.

Ultimately, the final decision regarding entry lies with the US immigration officer at the port of entry. It's recommended to reach out to the US embassy or consulate for any specific concerns or inquiries

In general, when you hold a valid B1/B2 visa for the United States, it remains valid as long as it has not expired and has not been cancelled or revoked by the U.S. authorities. The fact that you have changed jobs or moved countries should not directly impact the validity of the visa itself, as long as the visa has not been annotated by your previous employer. Drift Boss

However, it's essential to consider the purpose of your intended travel to the United States. The B1 visa is typically for business-related activities, while the B2 visa is for tourism and certain other non-business purposes. If your work-related trip falls within the scope of permissible activities under the B1 visa category, you may use your valid B1/B2 visa for that purpose.

It's important to note that even with a valid visa, admission into the United States is ultimately determined by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer at the port of entry. They will assess your eligibility for entry based on various factors, including the purpose of your visit, ties to your home country, and compliance with U.S. immigration laws.
