Length of stay for a B1 visa

Hi all,

I am a Canadian citizen who recently entered the US under a B1 visa. All the literature I can find leads me to believe that this visa is good for a 6-month period. However, the customs agent wrote an earlier date under the visa stamp. The agent told me that I have to leave the US before then. Can anyone clarify this? They didn't give me an I-94, just stamped my passport.
