B-1 Visa Granted

B-1 visa granted today.

My invitation letter states business is starting in Jan 14th but id like to know can I travel before Jan such as travelling early December and leaving within 6 months as I want to see a some places before my business starts or when my passport returns will it be stated that the visa is granted from Jan 14th.

Passport is back date of issue is 09th Nov 2011.
My business work those not start till Jan 14th which was on my application form when requesting B-1 visa.
I want to enter the US around Dec 13th to get to know the area, is this possible on the B1 as the officer said this is not a tourist visa its a business visa for the required work.
