  • Tax returns - Naturalization help.

I will be eligible for the naturalization application in around August of this year. I got divorced 2 years after our marriage and applied for a waiver. I got approved for the 10-year GC without any interview -- thank God. Now, it's time for the Citizenship which makes me nervous.

I wanna apply via the 5 year rule (being divorced to a USC 3 years ago). I have a joint tax return from 2008 while a head oh household return from 2009 to 2012 as I was taking care of my sister and made her a dependent. Will this be bad in any way to my petition?

I also ordered tax transcripts from irs.gov and they only the ones from 2009 - 2012. Why is this? I is it ok to present the self-filed return then for 2008?

And, is self-filing ok? I plan not to use a lawyer this time. I utilized a lawyer for both the marriage and divorce times of my petition.

Thank you so much in advance.

You can file on your own (that is exactly what I did and many do the same), you are not obliged to hire an attorney. Read the N-400 instructions carefully, fill in the form step by step, answer down all questions correctly, don't hide anything.

The transcripts for the last 3 years are ok, you need to have them with you in the interview, you don't need to post them with your N-400. You need to attach a copy of the divorce certificate and if married now the new marriage certificate and other docs, check the Document Checklist for N-400.

    Best of luck
