Downgrading from citizen to permanent resident?

I am a permanent resident now and soon will be eligible for citizenship. I want to know, once I become U.S citizen, Would it be possible for me to downgrade to permanent resident or do I have to apply for the green card all over again? Reason, If I decide to join politics in my birth country I need to let go of dual citizenship.
