  • how long it takes to get citizenship once we sent the application?

    Hi,

Our GC expires in Nov 2014. Instead of renewing GC we are thinking of applying for citizenship since we are eligible to apply now. But my problem is approximately how long it takes to get oat and new US passport after sending the application . Since we have to go to India In Nov 2014 for 1 and half month for some family function. We apply for citizenship by end of Feb, can we get US passport by Sept and the Indian visa in another 2 months?

If our application gets rejected then do we loose the money ? or do we have to pay again when we reapply it ?

Since we have to travel during Nov, Is it good to renew the GC

    Please advice.

    Thanks

If the Green Card is expired when you have the Naturalization interview, you will have to provide proof of approval of a new Green Card.

Naturalization has been taking 4-8 months, depending on area of the contry.

      Hi Sasmi,
You mention we, so I assume it's you and your wife, anyway since your GC will expire in Nov 2014, you may start the process right away. However, Rayb is saying that it takes 4-5 months he/she might be correct but if all is in order, you never know what's the outcome is gonna be with the IO. The officer might have to request some other evidence/info/documents.

Anyway, I'm not trying to complicate things for you but that's how USCIS work. Just go ahead ASAP and hope all will be fine, wish you luck.

      Regards.

I don't think you need to have proof of approval of a new GC to apply for Citizenship. You will not be able to travel outside of US if GC is expired but you can still apply for citizenship after GC has expired.
