  • N-400, Part 8: Time Outside The United States

In a few months my wife is going to file 90 days early for her citizenship based on her marriage to an American citizen (myself). She will be doing this after being a lawful permanent resident for "3 years."

Part 8 of N-400 asks "How many total days (24 hours or longer) did you spend outside the United States during the last 5 years?"

Seeing how she was not here for the majority of the 2 years before we married, would I have to add up the days she was not in the United States during the 4th and 5th years? After all we are applying based on 3 years of marriage, not 5.

For example, I'm worried if I answer that she was out of the United States for "700 days"or so, and then answer question 2, "How many trips of 24 hours or longer have you taken outside the United States during the last 5 years?" with "1 trip" that it will look like she married me and then spent basically 2 years out of the United States, when in fact she has been here with me the entire time (almost 3 years).

If anyone could give me guidance on this I would appreciate it.

Count the days within the last 3 years, and include an attachment describing your calculation.
