  • Appliying for Parent naturalization and minor child name change

Can some one please advise me on folloiwng.

we(myself and minor child) have recieved GC in Mar 2009 thru' employment GC process and I am planning to apply for my citizenship.
I am planning the change my daughters firstname. It's big so we want to change it to short name.
can I apply for my citizenship/naturalization and once mine is approved then can i get the court order and apply for her citizen certificate and US passport with new firstname?
    or
I have to apply for her name change first then I have to apply for my citizen ship.. please advise.

Appreciate your help and quick responses.

    Thanks
    Suresh.

You can proceed with your daughter's name change either way: court name change now, or when applying for her Citizenship Certificate with form N-600, after you are naturalized. The latter would probably be more practical, as citizenship application usually provides an option for USCIS to handle the name change (if the applicant has a legal right to the change) without you having to pay the local court fee for a name change.

Though fees vary, $400 to $600 are typical court fees for name changes.

Ray, Thank you for Quick response.
Child first name column in n-400 form doesn't fit her firstname since it's long name.. after I print it can I write with pen ?

On N-400, child area, you can put "See attachment" and neatly print entire name on separate attachment page.

As an alternative, just truncate the spelling of first name on N-400 form, which is standard practice with long names.

          Hi Ray,

Sorry for repeating , Just want to know I understand correctly..

I can do minor name change through N-600 form during naturalization with out court order ? or Court order is mandatory to change minors name during citizenship

I'm sorry, but I posted an assumption that a legal name change could be done on form N-600, which is not the case.

For Naturalization (of an adult), a legal name change can be indicated on form N-400, and USCIS routinely handles the court change for no additional fee.

But when using the N-600, this is not an option on the form. If the name you wish to use has already been in legal use, show it in Part 2, #1. But if not, I would recommend doing a court action name change before or after applying for the Citizenship Certificate ("before" is probably better since the new name could be shown on the application and on the subsequent Citizenship Certificate).
