  • Help!Getting passport in Utah via derivative citizenship

I'm currently 27 years old. Born in 1986. Been a LPR since 1996. My dad was naturalized in 1998 (I was 11-12) and my mother in 2006 (after I was 18.) I believe I have a claim to derivative citizenship via my father. Am I wrong?

My second question is this, if I have a claim to citizenship, can I apply for a passport in my state? My LPR card has long ago expired, and now my Utah DL is expired, but only because when I went to renew it the law in the state had changed as far as what was acceptable ID (my expired PR card) so I was essentially treated as an illegal and not allowed to renew my license. So because of this complication my only identification is an expired drivers license. Hence my rush to apply for a passport, if thats a possibility for me. I know that the DLD would take a passport as identification.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Your father's naturalization while you were under age 18 does qualify you for derivative citizenship, but your expired Green Card could be a "deal breaker," since you currently lack proof of Permanent Resident status. You will need your dad's original Naturalization Certificate and a current Green Card to apply for the passport or a Citizenship Certificate ($600 fee, form N-600). The replacement Green Card will cost you $450 (form I-90).
