My husband is a Canadian Citizen who has PR here in the states. He has just sent in his application for US Citizenship. We have now learned his mother has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer. She is alone back in Canada and has no family with her. He wants to go back to take care of her, however doesn't want to jeopardize his application. Any suggestions?

Your husband should wait for the Biometrics appointment notice, a couple of weeks after the N-400 is received by USCIS, and complete the Biometrics. He can then return to assist his mother, but should make himself available for a subsequent interview notice, in probably 3-5 months after the Biometrics.
