  • Citizenship after divorce/ permanent green card

    Good afternoon,

I currently have a permanent green card. My ex wife and I divorce shortly after I obtained this status. It's been 4 years now. My question is, after 5 years, I know I can apply for citizenship which I would like to as I consider the US my home now. Would that divorce be a problem? I have not spoken to her since as we left on very bad term ( she cheated on me etc... ) so I did not really kept anything and would have an hard time putting together an other file about our marriage as we had when I applied for the green card ( we did not go through a second interview so I guess it means that they were happy with all we submitted back then ). I just want to see what my options are and whether or not I should be ready for complications.

    Thank you

When applying for Naturalization based on the 5-year rule, you can expect to be asked about the former marriage during the interview. It normal when one's Green Card was acquired based on marriage to a U.S. citizen. Just be honest with your responses.
