  • My husband applied for citizenship now he has to go home because his mother is dying

    Hi,

My husband is a Canadian citizen and has applied for citizenship. After he applied, his mother has been diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer. She is alone is Canada and we are planning to leave sometime next month and stay until she passes. Her prognosis is 6-12 months. We made an appointment with our local USCIS as per the 800 helpline. They recommended that we go in and ask if if he get his citizenship expedited rather than apply for a re-entry permit. We were told that his status was that he is in the "QUE" to be scheduled for his interview and test, and that he was better off just going to Canada and then flying back for his interview. My question is is the email status update on the USCIS work? Otherwise we will have to get a post box at UPS and have our mail forwarded to Canada, because I think you have to take the actual letter in when you have your interview.

My fear is that as long as it takes to forward mail to Canada he may miss his interview.

    Any suggestions

The status notification on e-mail (or in website) will just tell you that they have updated your case & mailed you a letter on this date to schedule an interview. The actual date of the interview will not be mentioned there. It might be possible though to know the date by calling them (I'm not sure.).
