I had my citizenship interview last month and everything went fine. I passed the test, etc and signed my photographs and all. At the very end, the officer informed me that I need to submit some more documents as regards my traffic ticket. I had reported on my application form that I had 3 traffic violations. First one was about 14 years back, 2nd about 9 years back and the last one was last year. I had no documents as regards my 1st violation, had attached a copy of my ticket and the fine paid for the 2nd violation (both were in other stets where I resided previously), and for the most recent one, I had a copy of my ticket and the defensive driving course I took after that to keep any points off my driver's license. The officer asked me if I have the receipt that I paid the fine for the most recent violation. I informed the officer that the judge waived the fine, asked me to do defensive driver's course to keep this off my record and all I paid was court processing fees. Well, I was informed to submit the proof of the court records and that I actually paid the fine. The officer said that there are no issues about the 2nd ticket (from 9 years back) as I had attached an email receipt that I paid the fine and did not comment anything on the oldest violation (14 years back) at all. Since the N-400 form instructions said that if the violation was not related to alcohol or drug used and the fine was less than $300 or points on your license, you need to not submit any documents in that regards, I was a little surprised that I was asked to submit anything in that regards. Anyway, the officer said that showing that I paid the fine will show that I am good moral character and pay my fines!
I was expecting the form N-14 to say that I need to submit the necessary court documents as regards my last traffic violation. However, the form I received says that I need to submit certified copies of all arrest reports, the information or indictment, the judgement, the fines paid, the outcome or disposition of the arrest and the sentence for every arrest, including probation orders and evidence of completion of sentences!
I already have the certified court documents of my traffic violation and receipt of payment of fine for my most recent violation (since it was local). However, I am wondering whether I am expected to procure the same for my other two tickets as well and submit it. The officer explicitly stated that I need to submit it only for the most recent one, but the letter states "all". I don't even remember the date of my traffic violation 14 years back and it will really be difficult to get that information since I am almost 1000 miles away now!
Any advice? Should I just send the documents about the most recent violation (as stated during my interview) or try to procure the same for all my 3 violations or get a lawyer?
Funny thing is my wife had her interview the same day, she has 2 tickets over the last few years and was asked to submit nothing. So it's very random.
Thank you.
