  • Citizenship and Medicaid?

    Hi Guys,

I am new to the forum. My mother had a citizenship interview on Tuesday this week. She is 56 years old and cancer survivor. She do not work and dependent on me. She has Medicaid from state as her medical insurance. The Interview went well. She passed her English and civic test. The officer asked her about her medical insurance and she mention that she is on Medicaid. Officer then asked her how she support her. She mentioned that she is dependent on me and show my tax returns showing her as dependent. The officer that asked me to write a letter to USCIS to show that I am supporting her and will be supporting her in future. At the end she was given a paper showing that the decision cannot be made at this time and will be notified about the decision letter. The letter did mention that she has passed English and Civic test. I am not sure what it mean. Do you think this is a problem? Please comment.

It sounds as if the interviewer lacked the authority to provide a closure to your mom's application and is escalating the decision to supervisory review.

In my opinion, as you suspect, the only "game stopper" here would be your mom's admission that she was receiving Medicaid benefits already, and that's not even a certain obstacle.

Get the requested letter and evidence to them, as that might be the only thing holding up an approval.

Thanks Ray for your input. I am not sure what letter and evidence you are referring to and how can I take these evidence to them without an appointment. In your opinion Is medicaid a problem before citizenship? I see on USCIS website it's not a public charge unless its used for long term institutionalization. Please advice.

You stated earlier that "...he officer that asked me to write a letter to USCIS to show that I am supporting her and will be supporting her in future.," which I would assume should be a letter and evidence that you have the resources to support your mom (though proof of support by a third party should not normally be a requriement for Naturalization.

The paper your mother received at the end of the interview should have provided some instructions for getting the "letter" back to their office, either in person or by mail.

I can't say whether receiving Medicaid benefits would be a problem with her approval.

Oh OK I got it. Regarding the letter and evidence of resources, The officer called me in the office after her interview (I accompanied her to the interview) and asked me to write a letter that I will be supporting her in future as long as she needs help.
Based on my research on internet and USCIS website Medicaid should not be a problem as it is not considered public charge unless it is used for long term institutionalization. We are keeping our fingers crossed and hoping for a positive news.
