  • N-400 Multiple Questions: Work/school history, tax returns, etc.

Hello everyone. I am applying for my citizenship soon. A few questions that have come up upon researching are:

    1. I did not start employment until 2012. I looked at my IRS transcripts and it says that I have a verification for non-filing for 2011. What does this mean? I was only going to school at that time so... but I am dependent under my mom. Does that make a difference?

    2. I've had multiple jobs where I start then quit for a few months then start at the same place again. What should I do in this case? Let's say I work at X from June 2012 to August 2012, quit, then go back December 2012 to and I work there until now. Should I separate the dates, or can I just combine them so it would be "June 2012 to present"?

    3. I am going out of the country in a few weeks. Can I submit my N-400 beforehand?

    4. Do the dates of employment/residence have to be an exact date? Or can it be an estimate?

I am hoping to hear from you soon! Please & thank you.

    1. The IRS transcript for 2011 verifying nonfiling is of no particular importance with your N-400 submittal.

    2. Put together a separate sheet of the various employment assignments for the last 5 years, then enter the most recent on the N-400, with the separate sheet as a backup to show all employment for the 5-year period, in chronological order (most recent first).

    3. Don't go out of the country until you have completed Biometrics, or wait until you return to submit the N-400.

    4. Resident/employment dates can be estimated, in absence of clear records.
