I received my green card in 2000. I stayed in the country until I left the country for about 220 days (Sep 2010 to Apr 2011) to study abroad in Japan (credit for an american university). I left the country every now and then (for about a week or two) after that just to travel.
I wasn't sure if the continuous residency was the last 5 years (from the date you apply for citizenship) or just 5 years you've lived in the country ever. Technically I was in the country for about 10 years until I left to study abroad. Since I planned on only staying in Japan for a semester or two, I filed my tax returns during that time and kept all my bank accounts open. I also have US university transcript that will show the Japanese university credits being applied to my US college degree. I also had a re-entry permit while I was abroad.
Can I apply for naturalization or should I wait for 10 more months until it's officially 5 years since I came back from Japan? (Apr 2016)
