  • N400 SSDI and Medicaid

Hi... I have done my best to search here to find some answers..... but not found anything directly pertaining to my own situation.

I have been a LPR for 10 years.... and now wanting to apply for Citizenship. Yes, it has taken me sometime but it is not a decision taken lightly, I now feel able to 'give up' the country of my birth. And truly wish to become a fully involved Citizen.

My husband and I manage solely on his Social Security Disability Insurance and I now have Medicaid (since an emergency hospital stay in 2014 (I received it under the ACA) Our income is such that have not been required to submit yearly tax returns.

Are these things going to cause problems for my application? I understand that SSDI is not a means tested benefit and that Medicaid legally acquired is not counted as a Public Charge? It does worry me and as you could imagine, our income rules out hiring a lawyer to help. Your advice is appreciated.

edit to add......I don't know whether I should apply as the 5year way or marriage... we were married in 2004

I am also wondering whether I should apply the 5 year way or marriage??...... we married in 2004

    Thank you.

any type of medical condition doesn't stop you from becoming a US Citizen. Since you qualify for medicaid you don't need to pay the $680 fee. fill out the fee waiver and get a verification letter from your county office for medicaid and attach that as a proof for the fee waiver. and apply on basis of 5 year in the us and not the marriage one. you don't need a lawyer for n-400. if you can fill out the paperwork no need to waste money. unless you have criminal history or other type of complicated case.
