  • Applying for Citizenship - No taxes filed

    Hello All,

My parents are applying for citizenship, but they have not filed any taxes because they do not have a job or make any money.

I support them financially and so I claim them as dependents when I file my taxes.

What should my parents take with them to the citizenship interview - should they take my tax filings for the last 5 years since I' have been claiming them as dependents since they became greencard holders? Will they have an issue at the interview since they never worked here or filed taxes?

In addition, they have been receiving medicaid benefits (medical/dental) from the state. Will this cause an issue to get approved?

If your parents have not worked and were not required to file income tax returns, there are no issues with their citizenship requirements.

        Is State Id required

        Hello,

Neither of my parents have a valid State ID. It was not necessary to get them State ID as they don't drive or go out to work.

Is a State Id required for CZ interview purposes? Do they "have" to get the Non drivers license State Id before the interview?

Their current Id is their Green card and when they travel within US, they always show their Greencard at airports etc.

I assume that by State ID you mean a driver's license.
I don't recall seeing anywhere the need to have a non-drivers driver's license. The green card is an official photo id and should suffice. (unless they specifically ask for a driver's license).
I suppose your parents have a passport from their home country - that is also a good photo id , which they should take to the interview, just in case.

That said, they might want to get a non-drivers license for other purposes - since a driver's license is recognized and expected everywhere - whether it is when you write a check at the grocery store, or fly domestic, etc (no need to carry the green card everywhere). if a driver's license is lost, it's a lot easier to replace it than, say a green card or a passport.

            Thank you, Allopez.

In a few of the CZ interview samples on youtube, the state ID was always asked and I just wanted to make sure that in my parents case that just the GC and their native country's passport would suffice as Id at the interview. Is there anyone in this forum who has successfully completed their interview without taking a driver's or non-driver's state license to the interview?

If it is not needed for the interview, then I would rather not bother getting the non-drivers license for them as they don't get out of home much and has not needed one in the many years they have been residents here.

I did have a license and I didn't take to the interview with me. The first thing the IO asked me was for D/L I was like I didn't bring it...Then she was like how do I know you are a California resident...but she let me bypass the ID. So it'll be better for you if you apply for state ID for your parents.
I had my Indian passport, and GC and that wasn't enough for them

Yes, my parents filed their N-400 only in March. We are yet to receive the FP notice.
They did not send any documents for proof of residence as it was not asked at the time of filing the application. However, they plan to get their Non-drivers license before going to their biometrics appointment. A bank statement will be a valid proof of residence PLUS the drivers or non-drivers license.
