  • Green card to citizenship...wedding.

    Hi,

I have my green card since 4 years. I will apply for citizenship in 1 year. What is the impact if I get married with a Canadian citizen during the application for US citizenship (my paperworks for my request will be already sent but have to wait after the interview)?
My husband will sponsor me for Canada after the wedding. I want to get my US citizenship in case we want to live later in USA or something happens between us and I have to come back in USA.

    Thanks for your help.

You may apply in 9 months (5 yrs - 90days) . There is no rule against who you marry even before you apply. You just need to satisfy the residency requirements and be willing to do what the forms say (eg take the oath, etc) . A long time ago, it used to be that you had to reside in the US after getting the citizenship but that's no longer required.

Is there a place on any gouvernment website where I can find that explicit explanation? It's not I don't believe you, but I need an official reference.

        Thanks
