I am helping a man who is not here legally (is what it is). He is homeless with very few resources. And understandably, most of the resources typically available to a very poor homeless man are not available to one who is a citizen. So.... I am trying to help him possibly get some kind of document that will help him get in a better place.
What I have been told is that several years ago, he was a victim of a violent crime. Somebody, somewhere, has said that he may qualify for a "U" visa from the violent crime.
I am bit confused about possible next steps - and so is he. He obviously cannot afford an immigration lawyer, and I can't afford one on his behalf.
The closest we've found is a Catholic Charities organization who offers lawyer consults for $35 - at least the first one. Who knows after that.
Would really appreciate any possible recommendations that anyone might have. I can tell him that his only option is to hold a sign for a few days to try and get $35 and go from there, but if his odds are basically nil, that seems a bad thing to do.
Thanks very much,
