N-400 at risk for carrying my friend's id card?

I have been a green card holder since 2008. Three weeks ago I sent my N-400. A few days later my check was cashed and I received the confirmation letter and biometrics appointment. After this it I went to Mexico on Vacation. During my trip to Mexico I got together with a few friends I met in California in the past. I only spent 10 days in Mexico and returned to USA to do my biometrics.
Anyway, one of my friends left her purse at the house where I stayed in Mexico once she stayed for the night. I was planning to drop it the day I left but I did not have time so the two of us agree that I was going to mail her purse as soon as I would be back in USA.

As I was coming back from Mexico I had to go through customs were my suitcase was inspected. One of the officers saw the purse so I explained that it was my friends and I was going to mail it to her. I wanted to show him my ******** conversations with her where he could see that we had agree to have her stuff mailed and I also wanted to show the officer the pictures together and other stuff to show that indeed she is in Mexico now.

The purse had 2 Mexican IDS, 1 Mexican atm card, 3 Mexican store gift cards and 6 or 7 business cards from people she knows in Mexico. The purse also had 2 business cards she got when she was in USA from guys she dated.

The customs officer took her ids and check them and as soon as he got back he told me that my friend lived illegally in USA and he thinks she may be living illegally in USA now. Then he said that I supported her and he was going to document all this to attach it to my record. Before I was let go I could see that this officer printed a document with all these details and asked someone to add it to their system.

I am afraid now that this could prevent me from becoming a citizen. I never had a problem in the past so I expected to become a USA citizen in a few months without problems. I am thinking, can this incident bar me from becoming a citizen? Should I just expect that I will be question about it during the interview and I’ll need to explain everything? What’s the most likely outcome?
Any opinion/comment will be welcomed. I am worried about my fate after this.

Ok the bad news is sponsoring illegal immigrants is a serious offense that can not only stop you from being naturalized but also get you deported. I highly recommend that you speak to an experienced attorney. Go to Google and find the best-rated one in your area.

The good news is that they can't deport you without an immigration judge. Assuming everything you said is correct, I think the truth that you are not sponsoring illegal immigrants will emerge and you will likely not be deported and or prevented from naturalization.

But either way, your friend is not in a good shape if she's undocumented. She should also speak to an immigration lawyer.

Thanks for your answer. First, I am not worried about my friend, she is happy in Mexico. Second, I have never aided undocumented people to come to United States or anything like that. I have plenty of pictures I took with my friend in Mexico, she could easily send me documentation showing that she lives there and not in USA. I also have a chat with her where we had agreed to meet the morning I left to give her the purse but then the meeting was cancelled. I have it documented!

I do have 2 questions:
1. They did not ask me to sign anything, and they gave me no paperwork regarding the incident. They did keep her Mexican ID though. If they wanted to present charges, shouldn't I have some paperwork?
2. To prevent me from naturalization immigration should prove that I sponsor illegals right? Just because I met with someone who was illegal and I had her purse with her Mexican IDs is not a reason to deny naturalization? I mean, the problem would be if immigration thinks that I had those documents to help her enter USA, that's right?

You are right that having someone's purse is not a reason to deny naturalization. But such matter could come up here and there during their review of your documents, and it could significantly delay the process. That is why I think you should talk to a lawyer who knows the right documents to attach to your application in light of the event.

All your worries are justified, especially in today's world of rising xenophobia and radical right-wing politics. It's good that you are documenting and gathering evidence. The USCIS will do their investigation of your friend in connection to you. It's very possible that in their investigation that they found out that you have never sponsored illegal aliens. Otherwise, they will refer to an immigration judge and you will be served a notice to appear in court.

What I just said is the absolute worst case scenario. Again I would definitely discuss it with a lawyer who will know what to do.
