Citizenship Eligibility - NEED Clarification

Hello,

My in-laws are on a green card since 2012. They have made few trips out side of US including a two year extension (from INS). My question is,

1) Will the 2 year stay in India count into 5 year eligibility or excludes it? What I mean is, will they be eligible to apply for Citizenship in 2017 since it will be 5 years from their green card date, or they will have to stay until 2019 to complete 5 years?

my guess is that they will be eligible in 2019, but i don't know the circumstances under which they were granted an extended stay abroad.
