The instruction on the i942 that's used for the n400 for fee reduction says you need to have photocopies of originals of supporting documents like w2 and tax returns. However, everything has been done online. Can I just print off electronic copies?

Your question is confusing.
All forms ultimately need to be printed and returned to the USCIS via the mail. Nothing can be submitted online for this, including the N-400 itself.
What you can do, to save you hand writing the forms, is download the PDF files to a PC and a copy of Adobe Reader. Then use Adobe Reader to type in your answers, re-save the PDF with answers, and print the now filled in PDF.
If you're asking how you'd get a W-2 or Tax Return, yes, print it. Printing it and "photocopying" it are the same thing. You'll just need one copy submitted with your application and a second copy to take to your interview. You can get your Tax Return from the IRS's website, google "IRS Get Transcript" (and make sure the site you click is on www.IRS.gov).
I think the reason they tell you to photocopy it is that they don't want you to send your LAST physical paper copy of the document since they won't be returning it to you. Some people still get handed a physical W-2 by their employer or write in the Tax Return by hand.
