Hello,
I would like to know if anyone could help me with this question I have. I would like to know if I have broken the continuity of my residency for studying abroad.
I have been a green card holder since 2011. I have been traveling to visit family and friends for three months (summer break) out of the year, from 2011 to 2014. On 2014 I decided to go study abroad for a program that took about 2 years and 2 months. I applied for form I-131 Re-entry permit and left while the form was processing, but had to come back to do bio-metrics. I finally obtained the travel document and left for about two years (did not exceed the validity of the permit of two years). While I was abroad, I only studied, did not work or applied for any form of citizenship while abroad. My family remained in the USA for the whole time and even helped to pay for my students loans. I did not have a job before leaving, but I had a joint bank account with my parents.
I would like to ask if anyone knows if this does affect the continuity of my residence. I have read in some sites that I have broken the continuity of my residence and have to wait 4 years and 1 month before applying, however, they do not mention anything about a travel document. On other sites, I have done a citizenship calculator and mentioned that I have obtained a travel document. The site said that I have to wait for about two years. Lastly, on other sites, I read that if you are abroad for more than a year, you have to prove that you were not giving up your status (working there, applying for citizenship there, etc) and maybe you can still have your continuity. Is says on the USCIS page that an absence for more than a year may disrupt continuity, but I did not see anything about a travel document/ re-entry permit.
Thank you all in advance. Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated.
