I just received my fingerprint notice but unfortunately I am travelling that day. The notice has a section to fill out if you want to reschedule the appointment.
But I was wondering whether I could walk into the local USCIS center and get my fingerprinting done. We are at the Portland, Oregon center.

Yes you can! You might have to wait till the end as they will give preference to people with confirmed notice for that day.Tell them you are traveling that day. Take the notice with you.

Just following with my experience.

Went to the local USCIS office in Portland. Went in around 8.30. One of the employees doing the biometrics sent me to a managers office. She said they are really busy and can't really handle walk-ins. She did take my appointment letter, rescheduled me to a date 10 days from original date and gave me new appointment letter.

I have a feeling that if I had a real emergency like needing biometrics before flying out of country, they would have accommodated me on same day.

Very positive experience overall.
