  • My birth certificate name and passport name does not match. Need help in citizenship

    Hi All,

Being birth certificate as one of the primary documents for US citizenship process, form N-400 suggests legal name is per birth certificate (BC). My name in BC is not full name, it just has my father initial 'M' followed by my first name per my passport. The passport (PP), green card (GC) and Social Security Number (SSN) all shows correct with full last name and first name expanded. Only BC is an issue. My question is:

    1) In N-400 form, they suggest to write my legal name per BC. Now since BC being an issue, can I write my legal name in form-400 as per my PP/GC/SSN? Can they accept PP as secondary document for BC?
    2) On the contrary, if I specify in M (only initial) as last name in N-400 form for legal name section/column. It will not match last name of my other documents PP/GC/SSN. Will they reject my application due to insufficient characters in last name? M cannot be the last name as far as I can make sense.

This is the case for me, wife, son and daughter. In India, they just put initial in birth certificate and not full name (as a practice/tradition). I do not want to go back now and change for all 4 BCs and its not practically possible and might take long time (ever). So, kindly suggest and advise me in this regard. Appreciate your help.

    Thanks,
    Syed.

nobody asked us BC, they only check our passport (new and expired) green card and driving ID, so use your name in these document and keep your BC with you in interview (also take other document like marriage certificate, tax document and similar with you) if IO ask for it, when some people changed their name before interview and some request to change after interview, seems there is not any point in name, do not worry about this and take care about corona.good luck for all.
