I came across this site during my naturalization process and found some very helpful information throughout the process, I am now a naturalized citizen (as of May 24th). Unfortunately there was an error on my Certificate of Naturalization, my last name was written as my first. I didn't realize this was an error until I went to update my social security. I looked at the certificate several times and it never even crossed my mind it was a mistake. I must've just assumed it was written first name last name, but after it was pointed out at the social security office, I noticed there was no comma. The woman at the social security office informed me that this means I am in the system with the incorrect name order, but she was able to list my proper name order as another name. I assume this means when I go for my passport, they will have to put it as it appears on the certificate.
I have submitted the N-565 for replacement and received a receipt number etc. as of June 18th. Unfortunately I submitted it without checking on the processing times. I assumed the times would be fairly short, but upon checking it says 10 - 13 months. I hope to travel abroad for work around March of next year, I will need to show my employer that I am a citizen (I can do that with copies of the certificate I made), but I will not be able to fly. I will need to commit to the position a few months before I am due to travel and know that I will be able to.
With that said, I have a few questions.
1. Does anyone have a timeline of a recent N-565 they filed? I sent mine to the Nebraska office (from my understanding these are now being forwarded to the Phoenix lockbox)
2. Is there any way I can expedite the process?
3. If there is no way I can expedite it, is there any way I can cancel the process and just have them return the certificate as is? So I can at least get my passport? I would rather have my name in the wrong order than have to wait another year to possibly take this opportunity. I can always have it corrected in the future and amend the passport as well.
Not sure how long to wait before asking for it to be returned (if even possible), I was only able to find a few posts online about a timeline. They said once the replacement request was approved, they were told they would receive the new certificate in 60 days in one instance, and 21 days in the other.
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
