  • N400 - Legal name ? Please help.

What name should I put as legal name on the N-400 form? N-400 asks to put name on birth certificate as legal name, however my name is a longer variation of my actual name and it also doesn't match the name on my passport , social security card or the green card. I have not used the first name from my birth certificate on any documents.

More importantly, I am unable to find my original birth certificate. I have copies of the original.

for example my birth certificate has my name is AkshayKumar Lalitbhai Trivedi ( not my real name)
    Passport : Askhay Lalitbhai Trivedi
Green card : Askhay L Trivedi

Please advice based on your experience.

I would write "Askhay Lalibhai Trivedi," and let it go at that. I think there are lines in the N400 application for aliases or other names. I would write the green card name, and the birth certificate name. If the officer asks you: "What is your legal name?" say the one that you use most often. If the officer also asks: "Do you have any other names?" Tell him all the other names that you have had. Just be honest. If your English is good this should not be a problem. If it is, you may have to consult a lawyer or ask the officer what h/she wants you to do to correct the problem.

I cannot give legal advice as I am not a lawyer.

        suziq38 :

The front of my green card shows my name as "Akshay L Trivedi" ( initial for the middle name).
However name is printed as "Akshay Lalitbhai Trivedi" at the bottom in machine readable part.

Which one should I use for "Your name as it exactly appears on your Permanent Resident Card"?

        Would appreciate your help!
