green card expires before citizenship will be processed

Green card expires March'2020. Filled out N400 recently and have biometrics in 10 days. Processing time shows 23 months which will be November/December'2020.
We were planning to go on vacation in April'2020. Should I also apply for another green card in September (6 months before green card expires) or would getting I-551 stamp be enough? At what point could I ask for I-551 stamp? thx.

Just get an I-551 stamp; no need to waste money to renew your green card. Once you have your N-400 receipt you should be able to get an I-551 stamp. If you apply for green card renewal, you would probably still need to get an I-551 stamp anyway (processing times for I-90 can sometimes be around a year).

good to know there is no need to apply for new green card. at what point can one get I-551 stamp? Is it after green card expires or can it be done ahead of time. It's only good for 1 year and you can only get it once or can you get it more than once if processing time increases to be even longer? thx.
