  • Question about name change during the Oath Ceremony

    Hello everybody,

Did any of you have your name changed when submitting N400 (there are
some fields on the for allowing your to give a new name)?

Is that all you need to do for name change, to have the new name on your
    citizenship certificate and passport??

I searched through the forum and someone said you need to file the request
SEPARATELY to the local court. Is it the case? I am under the impression
that all you need to do is to be clear that you want a new name on N400 and
    that's it.

Can anyone who have your name changed share your experience? It would
    be much appreciated!

    Thank you!

    Hi,

We were told that USCIS is no longer allowing name changes during interview. You need to go through a local court. I was not allowed to change the spelling of my name. It was incorrect in my Indian passport and Greencard.

acpdelhi, thank you for sharing your experience.

So, did you file another form/request for name changing to your local court?

Our interviewer didn't say if USCIS allows it or not. He just mentioned if
we decided to do so, we have to wait until the local oath ceremony (they
provided same-day oath ceremony). Looks like the name changing process
      was taken care of??

Our main question is that do we still need to do anything else or file other
forms for name change. Or, nothing we need to do and our citizenship
certificates will have our new names?

      Appreciate your input!
      thanks

No, I didn't file a name change (spelling change actually) request yet. I am in SF Bay area. The interview and oath are not on the same day. I received the certificate on the day I took the oath. There were around 1200 people who took the oath on the same day at the same time and the oath was administered by an official from USCIS not a judge. There is no way I could have changed my name during the oath ceremony.

You can wait till the certificate comes and if the USCIS didn't process the name change, you can go to a local court and change your name before you apply for your US passport.
