  • Postponing Oath ceremony

    Hello Immihelp,

I gave my interview in Nov, 2006 and asked for an Oath ceremony date in March 2007. The officer was not sure if that would be accomodated - and I just got a letter saying my Oath ceremony date is in December.

I dont want to attend the Oath ceremony in December as I have to travel to India shortly thereafter and will likely not get the passport/visa on time - plus, I dont want to shell out an additional $200+ for the expedited processing and the hassle.

Is it a big deal to keep postponing the Oath ceremony date till March?

    What do you think?

Not sure why the officer told that your request cannot be accommodated. Write a letter to USCIS local office and tell them you will out of the country and cannot take the oath on that date.

Here is the answer to your question from FAQ posted in naturalization guide:

What should I do if I cannot go to my oath ceremony?

If you cannot go to the oath ceremony, you should return the "Notice of Naturalization Oath Ceremony" (Form N-445) that USCIS sent to you. You should send the N-445 to your local office. Include a letter saying why you cannot go to the ceremony. Make a copy of the notice and your letter before you send them to USCIS. Your local office will reschedule you and send you a new "Notice of Naturalization Oath Ceremony" (Form N-445) to tell you when your ceremony will be.

      Postponing Oath Ceremony

I went through my Citizenship questions in Early Aug. 2008 and was
told that I would get my Oath Ceremony letter soon and the Oath
Ceremony would be in Sept. Unfortunately, due to a personal reason, I
am overseas and I was expecting to come back the end of Aug, but now
it seems I might have to be overseas for a few more weeks. My mail is
being held at the post office and I dont know if the "oath ceremony"
letter has been mailed to me or not and there is no way I can see the
letter if it is even mailed to me.
I also called up the 800 number listed on the INS website, I gave
them the SRC number for the N-400 that I had and he told me that there is
no letter thats been mailed out to you. When I checked the INS
website I noticed that the case status has not been updated since June 2007.
I know that I went through the US history test and passed it in Aug.
2008. So I am worried about the validity of what the INS agent
      informed.

I am in Dallas, Texas and would appreciate if you can provide any way
in which I can contact the INS and request a postponing of the oath
ceremony. Or if there is a way I can find out when my Oath ceremony
is and I can plan my trip a day or two before that day.

Is there a phone number that I can call and get the information?

      Regards,
      Ankur

        Travel after interview before Oath

Is there any risk to travel out of US between Interview and Oath ? I won't be US citizen till I take the Oath and N-400 is issued right ?

I have a need to travel to India, might try rescheduling oath if the date is not convenient.
