Re-entry Permit

Hi,
Me and my family of 3 have Green Cards approved in 2004. I have 2 questions:
1. If I am out of the country for more than 6 months but less than a year, will I be allowed entry into USA without a Re-Entry Permit based on my Green Card.
2. If I am out of the country for more than a Year since my last re-Entry permit expiry, Can I still go back to the USA if my Green Card is still not yet expired.

Re-entry

Hi,
I mised some info. My GC is valid till 2014. So, if I stay out of the country for more than a year without Re-entry permit then will my Green Card get cancelled.
