  • British and desperate with an L1 visa

    Hi,
    I am British and currently resident in America on an L1 visa. So my visa is sponsored by and dependant on the company that I work for who transferred me from the UK office. I have been here nearly two years and am now in a position where my employment is not guranteed and this company will not support any application for citizenship. I have bought a house and settled down and have never had any intention of returning to the UK but am finding it impossible to change the L1 for citizenship or any visa that isn't sponsored by an employer. Does anybody have any advice? I have seen an attorney and at this point my options seem to be having a child or getting married. Any advice welcome but if you came here from the UK on an L1 and then had things not work out with your employer I would really like to hear from you.

    If you are desperate, you could enrol in a study program and change to a student visa. That would buy you time.
    Other than that, you could find another employer and get an H-1b, or
    get married.
    If you choose the marriage path, make sure you get married to a US citizen
    and not a green card holder. (Green card is different from citizenship).

    If you want to research the different types of visas yourself;
    go to www.uscis.gov or
