  • Urgent question, need help ASAP!!!!

Almost 5 years ago, I got my GC 4 months after being laid off. I plan to apply my citizenship now and I am wondering the 4-month time gap in my GC process would affect my citizebship application.

Thank you in advance for your kind help.

I am not sure what you mean by 4 month gap after being laid off.

The requirement for the citizenship is a 5 year continuous residence and you can apply when at (5 years - 90 days). There may be a question or two about the length of your continued employment with the sponsorer of the green card though. I am not sure if there is a wrong answer for the situation of being laid off, that is clearly beyond your control.

Employment based GC to U.S. Citizenship

In most cases that I am aware of they never ask about previous employment during the U.S. citizenship interview / test.

However, there has been just one and only one case that I know of where this person was asked on how long did he stay with the employer through whom he got his GC.

As long as the person has convincing and justifiable reasons, it's ok.

In your case, you did get your GC despite the fact you were laid off by the employer. Now, the employer terminated the contract with you, not the other way around.

So, you don't have to worry about that aspect at all.

Just make sure you fill in everything truthfully and double check your spellings, information and especially the names and dates.

The entire process is very simple. I personally filed my own papers and got naturalized with my spouse within 5 months.

        Best wishes.
