  • Naturalization for my Grandfather

    Hi,
    My Grandfather is 4 year shy from the 15 years minimum that is needed to be able to have the naturalization questions done in his mother tongue (spanish). My question is if in fact it is necessary to have 15 years minimum to have your naturalizaton test done in your language even though my grandpa is 82 years old. Second question: How many questions are there to be studied for the naturalization test?
    Pls reply asap.

    Millly - I would advise you to discuss your grandfather's case with an immigration attorney. They might find a way around the regular procedure since your grandfather is 82 years old.

    The general requirement for one to demonstrate a knowledge of the history principles and form of government of the United States in the language of their choice is:

    * A person who, on the date of filing of his or her application for naturalization, is over 50 years of age and has been living in the United States for periods totaling at least 20 years subsequent to a lawful admission for permanent residence;

    * A person who, on the date of filing his or her application for naturalization, is over 55 years of age and has been living in the United States for periods totaling at least 15 years subsequent to a lawful admission for permanent residence.

    Also, the following persons are required to demonstrate knowledge of the history and government of the United States, but they are allowed to do so in the language of their choice and are entitled to special consideration:

    * A person who, on the date of filing his or her application for naturalization, is over 65 years of age and has been living in the United States for periods totaling at least 20 years subsequent to a lawful admission for permanent residence.

    If you can prove that your grandfather is medically determinable physical or mental impairment or combination of impairment that has lasted or is expected to last at least 12 months, he is not required to demonstrate knowledge of history or government.

    I tried to find out whether there is any separate naturalization test for people over certain age but I couldn't find any. The regular naturalization test has around 100 questions. On the day of the interview, one will be asked around 10 questions and you are expected to answer at least 6 of them correctly.

    Hope this helps.
