Challenging question: Passport expires within a week of Interview

Please help Immihelp:

My wife has her citizenship interview coming up on July 3rd. She is supposed to take her passport in the interview. But the passport expires on July 10th. She has not yet sent the passport for renewal. To renew the passport, the existing passport has to be sent with the application. My fear is what if renewed passport, along with old, does not come back in time for this interview.

Do you expect any problems if she goes in for interview with the passport to be expired in a week time?

Another problem is, even if she gets through the interview with the passport that expires in a week, and say INS stamps that passport with the citizenship, when she applies for her Indian passport renewal, won’t Indian consulate keep that passport or refuse to renew it stating that “the candidate has acquired the foreign citizenship and hence not applicable for the renewal of Indian passport".

I have been trying to contact Indian Consulate, but haven’t got any success yet.

There shouldn't be a problem

When my wife had her citizenship interview here in Detroit in March her Thai passport had already been expired since the previous October. Nothing was ever mentioned about it during the interview and nothing was stamped in the passport anyway. I think it's safe to say you don't need to worry about it.

You can renew it in 1 day

Hi,

I have the same prob like you. My wifes PP expires in oct and I expect interview sometime in september..However even if it gets late you can get passport in 1 day. You have to visit personally and they give you new passport within a day.

and also I read on previous boards that expired passport is not a problem.

I had my interviw yesterday .My PP was exppired 4 months back. NO questions asked about your PP.

Passport was not checked at all. Finished the interview and Oath without issues.

Thanks for the reply guys. My wife got the interview/test done today. She passed it in flying colors. Officer did ask for passport, but did not question its validity. Officer went through the application, asked 10 civic questions, one sentence to read and another one to write. And that was it. We both had sent our applications on the same day (3/19/07). She got the interview done and I am still waiting for the interview letter to appear in my mailbox. Hoping it wont be too long.
