  • Case number from cashed check

    Hi all,

We (me and wife) mailed our N400s in late July and received USPS confirmation as well. Our checks were cashed in late August and early September. The face of the checks shows a handwritten ESC number, albeit a 12 digit one. The back of the checks have a different, 13 digit printed ESC number on a dashed line. This number is harder to read than the handwritten scrawl. I have not received any notice from VSC yet.

I am changing my address (moving 5 miles within the same city) now. I did an online AR-11, but could not link our case numbers for the change of address because neither ESC number gives a case status.

    My questions:
    1. Which is the right case number? Should I just wait for the letter to arrive in the mail?
    2. Should I just file the AR-11 now and do an address change once I receive notice from USCIS?

    Thanks in advance.

You really should wait for your USCIS papers, the number there will be the definite number. If you have to move, ask the post-office to forward your mail to your new address, there is no harm in sending the address change form, but without the correct ESC number it may not be linked to you.

      Thanks, but aren't immigration papers "non-forwardable" ?

After assigning case # (as indicated on check), they will wait until money withdrawn and then will generate notice letter for you. Just keep your finger cross if you get it at your new address. Otherwise, it will return to them (no forwarding, sorry). This will simply delay your case for 1-2 months. Do not discourage. Call customer service and find out.

A month since check cleared. No notice.

My check cleared on 9/14/07. Still haven't heard from the good folks in Vermont.

Due to current backlog, there are 2-months waiting period for FP from the date they receive application. As per priority first they will take care of applications for GC, then related to EAD and in last N-400.
