Just wanted to share something I found out today.
I called the USCIS customer service number and had my call transferred to an Immigration Officer.
He first asked me for my A# and told me that my N400 information was not in the system yet.
I then informed him that my check cleared on the 8th of November after 3 months of sending the application (sent on 8/6/2007) and has a receipt number printed on the back. I also told him that there is also a number hand-written on the face of the check.
The officer first entered the number from the back of the check into the system and told me that the number did not belong to me and was for some totally different person.
He then entered the hand-written number but could not find anything on that either. He told me that it was more than likely that this hand-written number was actually my receipt number but my details were not entered into the system as yet. He asked me to call back after 10 days.
The moral of the story is that it is not necessary that the receipt number printed on the back of the check is "your" receipt number.
