My girlfriend and I just moved to Tennessee from Michigan. I am writing to you today because I need some help. My girlfriend was born in Vietnam in 1972 and was adopted by an American soldier. She came to the US when she was 9 months old and has been here ever since. Shortly after she got here, her parents divorced and either paperwork was lost or never obtained to show her proof of citizenship. She does have some documents, however, including adoption papers. My first question is this; does being adopted by US citizens automatically grant citizenship to the child? How do we go about obtaining proof of citizenship. I know that she has made attempts in the past and has not been successful. What document will she need to obtain, and what documents will she need to get it? Any help you can give us would be very much appreciated. Thank you.
