  • Leaving country for 5 months after getting interview call

    Dear Immihelp:
Thanks for providing such an excellent and useful forum.

My wife and I applied for US citizenship (filed N-400, completed fingerprinting), and have both received interview calls in September.

While I will be around, my wife leaves for India for a span of 5 months.

    1) Can I defer my wife's interview till such time she returns next year in February, OR pre-pone it to August (next month)? what documents do I need to show?

    2) is there any problem if my wife leaves the country for 5 months and returns for interview? any conflicts with the physical presence requirement? Note that she has already received the interview call.

thanks in advance for any guidance.

Try not to, unless there's an extreme emergency.

You can write a letter explaining your reason to re-schedule. You will also need to send the interview letter back to them.

Be advised, any further delay on her part will make her case more complex. Re-scheduling and leaving the country right before her interview, is not advisable.

Choice is yours but you may regret it big time down the road.

thanks, I was able to get the interview rescheduled prior to her departure date to India. however, she will be leaving 5 days after her interview, so will not be able to take her oath ceremony.
        1) if she is offered to take the oath on the same day as her interview, can we reschedule the oath ceremony?
        2) can we reschedule oath till such time she returns to the US in January 2009?

        any guidance appreciated
        thanks.
