  • Now a U.S. Citizen - Timeline - Houston

I'm happy to report that I attended my oath ceremony July 25 and I am now a U.S. citizen.

    Timeline:

    Feb 25 2008: Sent in N400 Application

March 2 2008: Received acknowledgement of N400 Application receipt

March 10: Received invitation for Fingerprinting

March 25 2008: Attended Fingerprint session

June 10 2008: Received Interview Letter

    July 22 2008: Attended Interview

July 25 2008: Attended Oath Ceremony in North Houston

Process took 5 months in total.

    Notes:

On June 6 I received a letter stating that I had missed my Interview scheduled for the beginning of June. However, I had not received an invitation for an interview. I immediately called the USCIS helpline & explained the situation. I also sent a letter to the local USCIS office explaining the situation. I was told by the USCIS representative on the phone that " this is not uncommon " . On June 10 I received the correct Interview letter.

Interview: I arrived 30 minutes early. My name was called after a 15 minute wait. I was told to wait in a separate room for another 15 mins. Interview lasted 20 mins. The officer was polite & professional. Was then told I had "passed". Returned to a waiting area for 30 mins. I was then given notice to appear at oath ceremony.

Oath Ceremony at M.O Campbell Center - Houston: Was told to be there at 7:00 AM. I arrived at 6:55. Waited in a lineup outside for 20 mins. Waited inside in a lineup for 10 mins and submitted my paperwork at about 7:30. I was asked to inspect my Citizenship document for correctness. My Greencard was also taken at this time. I was seated at about 7:45. The ceremony began at about 9:30 and ended at about 10:20. I (based on a coloured card I received when I surrendered my Greencard ) was called back to pickup my Citizenship document at about 10:40. I left the premises at about 10:45.

Thanks to everyone here. This website was most helpfull.

        willjdenn,
        Congrats on your citizenship!!!

Would you mind sharing what questions the officer asked you during interview (including English & history) ?
Also, Did you have any traffic tickets on your record, if so, how did you convince the officer about it?

Your information will help lot of people who are going to attend interviews :-)

        Thanks a lot in advance.

Well I attended my Oath ceremony yesterday in North Houston - there were 2307 people from 119 countries taking the oath. To answer my earlier question, families/relatives were allowed in the large indoor air-conditioned stadium/auditorium (MO Campbell Aldine HISD Center), so there were about 5000 or so people. We were asked to come at 7 AM, but the ceremony didn't start until 9:55 AM. Done by 10:40 AM. Then people were allowed to pose for photos with the judges (it is officially a court session), and there was a very large line for that - I thought the judge and others standing there patiently for a long time to pose for photographs with the new citizens was a VERY GENEROUS gesture, indeed. Someone was even taking photographs for you (with your camera of course - again very kind of them).

People were allowed to bring cameras, some even had camcorders. Very good ceremony, with lectures, and so on.

As for the other question, my interview questions were very simple (study the booklet they give you and it will be no problem). Almost think they should make the exam a little more difficult :-)

Who wrote the Declaration of Independence?
          Name 3 original colonies
What is the political party of the President?
Which are the 2 major parties in the US?
Who is the commander-in-chief of the military?
          Name a state bordering Mexico?

          English test:
          Read "Who elects the Congress"
Write: "The people elect the Congress."

There you have it - best of luck folks

          Jaydee
