  • About taxes

When it comes to naturalization, one of the requirements is to present a document for taxes. For 2007 I declared my taxes through internet, so I do not have any document on paper. When I go for citizenship how can I prove that I have really filled my taxes?

You must have received a refund check from IRS or must have a cancelled check if you owed money to the IRS.

Based on my own experience and from what I have heard they don't ask for your tax documents. That doesn't mean they will not ask you.

Also, even when you file taxes online it gives you an option to printout the documents. I am surprised you did not take a printout. your case could get delayed indefinitely if you don't produce the docs. they request. it is better to have taxes returns for the past 3 years with you.

you can get a tax transcript from the IRS. See their website for instructions on how to obtain it.

        IRS 1722 letter

I have been scheduled for an Interview shortly for Naturalization. In the Document Check List, I have been asked to provide evidence that I had not abandoned my residence status in the US, If I had taken trips outside of the US that lasted for 6 months or more, which in my case is relevant. So, can any one suggest / help as to how I can show that I had not abandoned by residence status.

Also I am asked to provide in original IRS 1722, which I understand is a transcript of the tax returns filed by me. I however have difficulty in obtaining this via the menu driven phone service due the the nature of my filing these returns. Will some one help me as to how I can get to speak to someone in the IRS, explain my situation and obtain the necessary IRS.

I am in urgent need of this help as my interview date is fast approaching!!!

Thanks in advance for the help!

The workings of the IRS are a bigger mystery than immigration. Go to your local office for assistance.

Did you have a lease or mortgage of a primary residence (not rented to somone else) to cover the periods you were out of the country? What about a car that you were making payment on? Where did your mail go? I'm sure if you were really "resident" you will not have trouble finding things that support you case.
