  • Applying for citizenship

I have received Green card in August 2003. Do I need to wait till August 2008 to complete 5 years of Permanent Residency to apply for citizenship?

Or can it be applied while close to 5 years?

    Thanks

There are several threads on this already.

Take a look at your greencard, find the date in "Resident Since." Add 5 years to that date and subtract 90 days - that is the earliest date you can file for naturalization.

If you got the greencard based on marriage to a US Citizen, the time frame is 3 years from the time you got the greencard and subtract 90 days.

      Noted awesomecol

      1. But what if I got my green card thru my father coz he is a citizen?

      2. And I stayed in the US from 1993 to 1998(with green card), left the country and came back Nov 2008. My greencard expired last 2003(Im still outside US), but I got it renewed/re-instated this year.

How will this work? will I follow my number of years stayed in america from 1993 to 1998 or I go back to zero? coz I just came back last year Nov08.
