My boyfriend was born in the Dominican Republic 34 yrs ago. He came to the U.S. when he was 3 months old. His mother is a Brooklyn born Puerto Rican and his father is a native of the Dominican Republic. His parents were married in October of 1974 in NYC, then went to the Dominican Republic where they had him in February of 1975, and returned to the U.S. May 1975. His father applied for citizenship and was naturalized sometime in the early 80's (not sure of the exact date) after my boyfriend was born. The only thing that his parents ever got for him was a Dominican Passport and eventually a greencard. His mother swears that she applied for citizenship for him when he was a baby, but if this was indeed done then why was he given a greencard and not something else? The greencard was not issued until 1996 and this was because he was traveling to the Dominican Republic.
Long story short the greencard expired back in 2006, he didn't take care of it and now his Driver's license has expried and w/out an up to date greencard he can't get a new license. Do we apply for a new greencard or do we try to get his citizenship, since by all legal technicalities he should be able to get his citizenship, both of his parents are U.S. citizens.
The other thing is that he has 2 felonies on his record, they are both over 5 years old and they were for fighting. Will this in any way affect the citizenship process or does it not hold any bearing since his mother was born in the states and lived here for most of her life accept for the 6 or so months she spent in the Dominican Republic?
Sorry this was so lenghty, please help... thanks in advance
