  • Child Citizenship question

Myself and my wife both applying N400..we have 10 yr old born in abroad, couple of friends mentioned i no need to file N600 for kid, after we both got citizenship, kid will automaticallyt become citizen and all three can apply for passport...Is that correct?
If so when and where we need Certificate of citizenship for kid ?...If i want to apply N600 for kid can i apply now or i need to wait until our N400 approval completes...Thanks

    1. That is true.
    2. Nothing do with at the time of N-400. After you become citizenship, apply N-600 for kids citizenship certificate.

Presuming your child already has green card such as yourself then after you naturalize as a citizen you may submit the N600 for your child to obtain a certificate of citizenship.

This is unnecessary to obtain a passport for child but it easier. The other method would be to make an appointment to appear at a US Passport Agency office and present the same evidence as you would for the N600 (birth certificate, your naturalization certificate, etc...). If sufficient the agency would issue the passport without needing a certificate of citizenship.

However, I have heard that having a certificate of citizenship also helps in other ways, such as applying for certain financial aids for colleges. It would be in the child's best interest to have the N600 filed.
